If anything, over the trying times of this pandemic we have gotten to know who are real heroes are and what is truly important in life. Owning millions in one’s bank account or having the latest gadgets did not prove their worth, as the world around us came to a stand still. Having a good health is what keep many out of the mercy of god’s hands.

There is no arguing that food is the most essential tool for our survival, DIR India has thus, been helping needy mothers in this dark period by providing them groceries around the clock. Be it rain or sunshine DIR India has taken upon itself to ensure that every mother has one less concern to worry about for her family, providing them with a balanced kit of grains, pulses and the crucial spices needed in an Indian Household.

 Komal, 29 years old widow from BANITA’s area with 3 children. Total family members 4. originally from UP and moved to Janta colony 13 years ago.The oldest one is 12 years old, the middle one is 10 years old, and the youngest one is  8 years old studying in sec12 government school.Her husband died 7 years back due to unknown reasons. She lives in a one-room apartment in her mother’s house on rent. Her mother is also a widow and does a maids job while she works as a daily wager (brick worker) and earns around 5000 bucks a month
26 years old Krishna, wife of kantanath studied till tenth standard and mother of 3.5 years old son Dipanshu.  Originally they are from Amethi, UP and moved to the Janta colony 6 years ago. They live here in a 1 room rental apartment for 2000 rupees and electricity, water charges separately. Her husband worked as a gardener and earns around 8000 a month.  Recently he met with an accident and fractured his arm because of which he is unable to work for a few months. So the family has no source of livelihood for a while. Her son studies in a sector 11 model school.
 
35 years old Rekha, widow of Late Rakesh ( 38 years old) and mother of 4 children lives in a rental one-room apartment.She is from Panchkula in a family of 3 sisters and 2 brothers.She was married twice, lived with her first husband for a year, got pregnant but the relationship didn’t last and she came back to her parent’s house. There she delivered a baby girl and got divorced from her first husband.In 2011 she got married to Rakesh who was also a divorcee and father of 4 daughters, his first wife died due to uterus cancer.Now she is taking care 0f 8 children.Rajesh had a paralysis attack in 2020 and died.Since there was no breadwinner left, she went back to the village and left 4 children from her husband’s prior marriage at their grandparent’s house. She came back to the Janta colony with her 4 children and is working as a maid in bungalows to feed her children
24 years old 12th pass rupa, wife of Jaspal belongs to UP.She is a housewife and got married 5 years ago. She is the mother of twins, boy and girl. Her children are 4.5 years old while her daughter is underweight husband is dumb and cannot speak due to which he is unable to get any job. He does a cleaner’s job in a hotel and earns 7000 rupees a month approx.
30 years old Sushila lives with her husband Sudhir and 2 children , a son who is 9 years old and a daughter who is 1 year old. Her husband met with an accident and fractured his right arm because of which he lost his job. Currently, they have no source of income. They live in 1 room made of cement sheets.
Chanderkali who is 40 years old lives with her husband Ram charan and 2 children, a son who is 8 years old and a daughter who is 16 years old.Her husband works as a gardener. They live in a hut with one room and 4 members. Her husband is not having good health status due to which source of income is not fixed
Raj kumari who is 29 years old lives with her husband Tirath and 2 children, a son 4years old and daughter 2 years old. They live in a 1 room rental apartment with 2500 rent and separate water and electricity bills. Her husband is a daily wager and earns 7000 per month approx.
 28 years old Radhika is a widow and mother of 2 children, Aryan who is 6 years old and Anmol who is 9 years old. Both children have studied in SWAD school, currently in sector 12 government school. Anmol is handicapped from birth and studies in 2nd class while Aryan is in 1st class.
  Radhika’s husband was mentally ill and died three years back. She has made a small shop in the house for her livelihood
30 years old ANJU, lives with her 3 children, 0ne male, 2 female. She belongs to UP and has lived here for the last 8 years, her husband is a vendor and sells vegetables. They live in a one-room rental apartment in Hawra line, Adarsh Nagar. During Lockdown, the family went back to villages so there were no work possibilities due to COVID19. After lifting the lockdown, they came back along with many other families in hope of starting new beginnings.
 
28 years old Pregnant Reenu and mother of 4.5 years old daughter and a husband who is also a vegetable vendor. They live in Hawra Kine in a one-room rental apartment. Both Reenu and Anju’s husband are brothers.

30 years old Kanti lives with her husband and 3 daughters in a one-room rental apartment in the Hawra line. The family is originally from UP, and her husband works in a utensils shop as a helper. During a lockdown, they also went back to their village due to precautionary restrictions
70 years old widow balbeeri, lives with her grandchild who is 14 years old. They are from UP and they moved to nayagaon 20 years ago. They live in a one-room apartment. She works as a maid to earn a livelihood.
 
25 years old Rupinder lives with her husband and 2 children in a 1 room rental apartment. Her husband is a daily wager and is suffering from seizures due to which there is no fixed job for him. Originally the family is from Jalandhar. They have been living here for 8 years.
 
28 years old Palak lives with her husband and 3 children in one room rental apartment in Janta Colony, Nayagaon. Originally they are from UP and moved to the Janta colony 7 years ago Her husband is a daily wager.
 
  23 years old Manisha lives with her husband and 2 children and mother in law in a one-room rental apartment. Manisha’s parents are from Panchkula and married to sonu in Janta colony, nayagaon 8 years back. Her husband is a driver and works on a contract basis. He is a drug addict and not committed to his family’s well being. She works as a cook in the DIR India NIPP program and her children study in SWAD school.
 
  30 years old Monika lives with her husband and 3 children in a 1 room rental apartment. They are originally from Bihar. Her husband is a daily wager and she is a housewife. They have been living here for 7 years.
 
  Her name is Amrita, 23 years old who was pregnant when the family came to the Janta colony from BIHAR four months back. She lives with her husband and is also the mother of a 1year 3 months old baby girl (who is with her grandparents in the village). She is illiterate and doesn’t understand Hindi. They live in a one-room rental apartment with no bed, but on the ground. She delivered her baby at home at midnight by Midwife after her pain started around 10 pm on 16th November 2021. Her baby weighed 2.5 kg at birth and after Counselling by Health Promoter, she got her vaccinated by Dispensary the next day. Her husband has been living here for the last 4 years and works as a mason (mistri).
28 years old Monika lives with her husband and 2 children (boys), one is 9 and the other is 5 years old. She is a housewife and the family is from PratapGarh( UP). They came to the Janta colony 11 years back for a better future. They live in a 1 room rental apartment. Her husband was working as a painter on daily wages and during the Covid period, he fell off the ladder from the third floor while doing his work and fractured his spine. Now he is bedridden and there is no source of income for the family left plus the medical bills of his treatment are also there. DIR India is helping them by providing grocery stores.
 
Her name is REKHA and she lives with her husband and 4 daughters. 2 daughters are in the village with grandparents. The children are 15, 12, 10, 6, 3 years old and the youngest one is 9 months old. They are from Sirsa( BIHAR) and moved to the hawra line 3 months back. They live in a one-room rental apartment and have no bed and mattress (sleeps on the floor). DIR India donated the clothes for children ( donated by shahved sir). her husband is a daily wager and deaf and dumb. Rekha works as a housemaid and leaves her 3 children to the oldest one who is 10 years old.
23 years old Madhuri lives in a one-room rental apartment with her husband and 2 children ( 26 months old Deepak and 4 months old Dipika). Her husband is a daily wager and the family is basically from UP. As her children are small, she cannot leave them alone to work and her husband’s income is not fixed so we are providing her grocery stores to support her livelihood.
28 years old Roopwati lives with her husband and 3 daughters (9,6 and 3 years old). They live in a one-room rental apartment. Her husband does washing of cars and earns 7 thousand bucks per month. They are from UP and moved to the Janta colony 8 years ago.
  Roopwati works as a maid to help her husband in earning a livelihood.
28 years old SIA lives with her husband and 2 children. (4 and 3 years old). They live in a rental apartment. The couple is physically handicapped and is suffering from Polio.The family is from Haryana and moved to the Janta colony 20 years ago. The family lives in a 1 room rental apartment with 4000 rent. The husband was working in Oswal guest house as a cleaner but now he is unemployed and looking for a job.
35 years old Shanti Devi lives with her husband and 2 children. Her children are 45 and 24 months old. Her husband works as a gardener in bungalows in Chandigarh and earns 7000 rupees per month. Basically, they are from UP and moved to the Janta colony 20 years ago.
 
68 years old Rosha Devi who is the mother of 4 daughters and a son, all married lives with her husband who is 70 years old. The family is originally from Bihar.They live in a 2 room house made of tin sheets. She is suffering from diabetes and asthma. Her husband used to work as a peon in saint john’s convent school. As he is retired now, the school is paying him 750 rupees as a pension.He is also suffering from heart ailments and is getting treated with PGI. Her son also lives with his wife and 2 children in one room She has only one Cot made of a bedstead of woven webbing or hemp stretched on a wooden frame on four legs, common in India. Her daughter in law also works as a maid in the bungalows of Chandigarh to support livelihood.
28 years old Reena lives with her husband and 2 children in one room rental apartment. Originally, the family is from Haryana and have been living here for 3 years. Her elder son Kunal who is 45 months old is physically handicapped and his speech is not clear. He is getting treatment from civil hospital phase 6 Mohali. Her husband works as a sweeper in sector 16 hospital with a salary of 8000 per month. As her younger child is 32 months old and her older one needs care and attention, she cannot work and has to look after them.
 
38 years old Shakuntala lives in her parent’s house with he husband and 2 children in the safeda colony. Her children are 18 and 14 years old. Her husband is handicapped and is unable to work. The family is originally from UP but they have been living here for 5 years. She is a housewife and does stitching of old clothes for livelihood. Her husband gets a pension of rupees 2500 for being physically disabled.
 
65 years old kammo is a widow and has no children. She is basically from Nepal. She lives in her own one-room house made of mud and sheets. She has been living here for 26 years. She is a widow and used to work as a massage therapist locally to earn livelihood but due to covid, she is no longer able to sustain her work.
 
33 years old Savitri lives with her husband and 4 daughters. The family is originally from UP and moved to the Janta colony 16 years ago. They live in a one-room rental apartment Her husband works in a phone and electronic store and earns 8000 rupees per month. She is also working as a maid in a school to help her husband in livelihood and earns 4000 per month. Her oldest daughter who is 12 years old looks after other three children who are 9 years old, 43 months and 18 months old respectively.
32 years old Poonam is a divorcee who lives with her 2 children 7 years old son and 6 years old daughter. She works as a maid and earns 5000 rupees per month. She left her husband 4 years ago as he was a drug addict and lives in the safeda colony in her parent’s house. The family is originally from Bihar.
 
 26 years old Suman lives with her husband Panna Lal and 1 child. Both of them are physically handicapped due to polio. The family is basically from UP and moved to the Janta colony 4 years back. Pannalal used to work as a helper in a restaurant and earned 2500 rupees a month but to covid, he lost his job and had no source of livelihood in order to survive the pandemic. Suman is unable to work due to polio, also her child is small, 3 years old. DIR India helped the family to cope with the pandemic and provided them with grocery stores. Now her husband is working as a greengrocer to earn a livelihood.
26 years old Priyanka lives with her husband and 3 kids ( 8, 5.5 and 4 years old).They are from Bihar and moved to the Janta colony 12 years ago Her husband is a daily wager and they live in one room rental apartment. Due to the covid pandemic, her husband had no source of income hence went back to the village. When the lockdown was over, they came back because they have no source of income in the village. Currently, he is working as a daily wager again.
25 years old Sanju, lives with her husband and 2 children ( 5 and 1 years old).The family is from UP and moved to Janta colony 2.5 months back.Her husband is a daily wager.The family lives in one room rental apartment.
21 years old Madhu lives with her husband and 2 years old daughter in a one-room rental apartment. The family is from UP and moved to the Janta colony 3 years ago. Her husband is a daily wager and earns 5000 rupees a month while she is a housewife. They moved to the city for a better future
 
51 years old Kisma lives with her husband and had 4 children. They live in a one-room apartment with a bathroom in it.They moved to the Janta colony 10 years ago and are originally from Haryana. Out of 4 children, 2 are married daughters while the 2 sons are single, working in a meat shop and helper in clothe shop respectively. None of them provides any financial help to their mother.Her husband is a cleaner in sector 36 local shop and earns 6000 per month which is insufficient for both of them.
 
38 years of Anita lives with her husband in the Janta colony for the last 30 years. The family is basically from UP and her husband is a rickshaw puller.They are parents of 5 children.Eldest son Dharmendra is working as a helper in cloth shop while 18 years old daughter Neha is 9th standard drop out and has taken tailoring course from DIR India.A third child who is 13 years old is in 8th standard, 11 years old son in 6th class, youngest child Aman is 8 years old and in 4th class. All of them are in the government school of Khuda Lahora. Anita’s husband is very conservative and doesn’t allow his wife and daughter to go out for work.
  During the lockdown, the family was in crisis as the husband and eldest son’s job was uncertain.Total income from both of them is 9000 per month for the survival of 7 members including school education.
 
  30 Years old chamma Devi lives with her husband in a one-room rental apartment. family is originally from UP and moved to the Janta colony 17 years ago.The couple is the parents of 3 children. Her husband does whitewash work and earns approximately 7000 rupees per month. His job is not fixed so sustainability is always questionable.
 
 BANITA’S AREA – 70 years old Jaswanti Devi is from Haryana. She is the mother of 3 sons. The eldest one lives in the Janta colony but doesn’t look after her mother. Earlier she used to live with her middle son in the village who died due to stomach pain. Now she lives with her youngest son and daughter in law in a two-room rental apartment in the Janta colony. Her son works as a cleaner in a private company and earns 7000 rupees a month also he is the father of 2 children and it is difficult for them to survive with this income.
30 years old Renu (Meenakshi’s area) lives with her husband and 3 children in one room rental apartment of Janta Colony for the last 5 years. the family is originally from UP. Renu is a housewife and her husband is a daily wager gardener working in kothis with no fixed income. Their monthly rent is 3000 rupees a month with separate electricity and water charges.
 
55 years old Prema Devi (Banita’s area) lives with her husband in a one-room hut made of bricks and cemented sheets on the rooftop. The family is from UP and are staying here for the last 25 years. The couple has 3 daughters. One is married and lives with them along with her husband and 5 years old daughter. Their second daughter used to work as a helper in a general store but due to declining health issues she has to quit the job. Their third daughter is the youngest one, 19 years old. Their eldest daughter’s husband is unable to walk properly due to an accident leading to a permanent defect in one leg, due to which they live here with Prema Devi (mother in law).
